What the latest projects actually tell you

Scale is becoming modular, not heroic. Ohmium’s Doddaballapura plant is built to ship fully assembled and tested PEM systems toward a 2 GW run-rate. That model—factory QA instead of field assembly risk—is what large offtakers now expect. Hamburg’s 100 MW plant is six PEM units, not one giant custom vessel. Petrobrazi’s second train is seven 5 MW modules. Buyers who still think in “one-off megaprojects” are behind the procurement curve.

PEM fits variable power. Hamburg explicitly chose PEM because stacks can ramp with wind and solar. That same trait matters for solar-coupled urea plants (e.g. Electric Hydrogen at Perdaman Helios) and for grid-balancing utilities that have ordered containerized PEM from Nel and others. If your power is intermittent, alkaline’s slower dynamics become an operating cost, not just a CAPEX line.

Industrial offtake wants purity and pressure. Refineries (Petrobrazi SAF/HVO), PtX sites (Måde, Hamburg HH-WIN), and chemical parks need high-purity hydrogen with predictable pressure. PEM delivers that without the extra purification burden typical of some alkaline trains—important when every extra compressor skid hits both capex and footprint.

What a serious PEM specification should include

When you evaluate suppliers for your next hydrogen generator or multi-MW plant, lock these points in the RFQ:

  1. Stack durability data under differential pressure, not only lab polarization curves. Recent membrane work (e.g. ITM/Gore-style thin membranes) is pushing voltage decay well below older 2030 targets—ask for 8,000–11,000 hour datasets.

  2. Containerized or skid-tested scope. Commissioning time at Måde and similar sites dropped because the PEM island arrived as a product, not a construction package.

  3. Turndown and restart behavior. PEM’s advantage disappears if the BOP cannot follow the stack.

  4. Iridium and membrane roadmap. Ultra-low-Ir PTEs are in multi-thousand-hour tests; ask how the vendor hedges precious-metal cost.

  5. Factory acceptance vs. site acceptance. Gigafactory-style production only helps if FAT includes the same operating envelope you will run.


From headline to purchase order

The companies shipping PEM this month are not selling “the idea of hydrogen.” They are selling repeatable MW blocks that plug into existing industrial sites—coal-to-hydrogen conversions, refinery hydrogen replacement, and regional pipelines. That is the market your plant will compete in.

If you are specifying a PEM electrolyzer for 2027–2028 operation, treat this week’s deliveries as the new baseline: modular PEM, factory-tested, sized for renewable variability, and already moving through customs and onto foundations.
